In the last year, many of us went without basic dental care because of concern with our health. Now a year later with everything returning to closer to normal and with all the safety procedures now in place, it's time to come back into the office. There is a lot you can do at home as part of preventive dentistry, but a key component is regular checkups and cleanings which help to prevent more invasive--and often costlier--problems from arising. To learn much more please contact your Winchester, KY, dentists Dr. Tena Powe and Dr. Walter Peavler of Central Kentucky Dental.

Brushing and Flossing

Even when we can't come into the office, brushing and flossing are our first line of defense against the damaging effects of plaque. Plaque does not take a day off, it builds on our teeth every day and the bacteria that live in it produce acids that can harm our teeth and our gums. It's why daily dental hygiene is important, but just as important are regular visits to our dentist.

During your regularly scheduled visit to the office, your dentist examines your smile to find out if there's an area of concern. If you visit often enough, twice a year is recommended, you can be sure that these problems can be caught early when treatment can be far less invasive. For example, a cavity can be treated today with a filling, which can prevent a root canal if it goes on for long enough.

In the same visit, a dental cleaning is customary, these remove the built-up and hardened plaque on your teeth that even the most avid brushing and flossing can leave behind. Even a single cleaning session at your dentist's office can reverse gum disease in its early stages.
